Hello Everyone,
I'm Aryan, a final year B.Tech Computer Science student. I secured AIR-477 in GATE CSE 2021 with a percentile of 99.53. I am going to share my GATE preparation journey in this blog.
I started preparing for GATE in my 3rd year along with college. As I decided to prepare from June 2019, I had 20 months before writing the GATE exam. I had divided the 20 months duration into two halves of 10 months. In the first 10 months, I took one year course of Ravindra Babu Ravula Sir and complete the whole GATE syllabus till March 2020, and for the remaining 10 months, I decided to do more practice questions, test series.
But, as we all aware of the lockdown situations. I was completely uncertain that, the exam will be held or not. This condition wasted my starting 4 months and I started feeling depressed because I was very focused on GATE 2021.
I started preparation again in August 2020 and I revise, give test series, solve PYQ 2-3 times and finally, I got AIR-477.
Now, I am going to answer a few queries that everyone faced during preparation.
Q1. What is the perfect time to start?
Ans: In my opinion, we need to start at the beginning of the 5th semester. You have no need to start in the first or second year. Enjoy life, try to understand the branch in a better way. You have 2 options generally Placements or GATE. Both are good and the choice depends on every individuls. Both things needed dedication but GATE needed more dedication. Choose the option first and then start preparation with full dedication without diversion.
Q2. Is coaching necessary?
Ans: Coaching is not necessary. There are various options to prepare like:
1. Offline Coaching
2. Online Coaching (Unacademy, GATE Academy)
3. Self Study using NPTEL Courses.
If you want to prepare in the final year, you should go for either Offline or Online mode but if you want to prepare from the third year, you can go for NPTEL courses too. You can enroll in all the courses of NPTEL that cover the syllabus of GATE CSE.
Only for NPTEL students: Just take lectures, do assignments properly, solve PYQ along with subjects.
In case of doubt, you can prefer standard books. No need to buy it, you can find pdf online.
Q3. What are the standard books for each subject?
Ans: C Programming: Dennis Ritchie, Data Structures: Narasimha Karumanchi, Algorithms: Cormen Databases: Korth, Discrete Maths: Keneth Rossen, Operating System: Galvin.
For more standard book names you can refer to the link: Standard Books
You must buy 31 years PYQ by Made Easy 31 Years. Although only the last 15 years are sufficient, you can go for it.
Must to do:
1. Prepare your own notes for each subject.
2. Must prepare short notes( 30-40 pages) included all subjects.
Short notes will help you revise quickly.
3. Must give at least 40 Full Syllabus Test.
4. Must give Made Easy's Moderate, and Advanced full syllabus test.
5. Solve or review PYQ 5-7 times in the complete journey.
6. Try to handle tough situations calmly.
7. Believe in yourself and you will achieve it.
8. Find weak topics and revise them.
9. Analysis of test series is more important.
Not to do:
1. Don't get panic before the exam.
2. Never compare your marks with others.
3. Don't share your test series marks with others.
4. Try to avoid social media.
5. Don't think about marks during the exam, give your best.
Q4. How much time we should spend on preparation?
Ans: It completely depends on your learning speed. But I think overall 1200-1300 Hours are more than enough for preparation.
In the month of January dedicate complete time to GATE only.
Q5: What is the safe score in GATE?
Ans: It might get changed, but I am giving a general idea:
General (Non-EWS):
Top 7 IIT's: AIR<500, GATE Score: 750+, Marks: 62+
Top NIT's(Trichy, Warangal, Suratkal): AIR< 800, GATE Score: 710+, Marks: 55+
IIIT Banglore: GATE Score: 650+
General (EWS):
Top 7 IIT's: AIR<600, GATE Score: 700+, Marks: 58+
Top NIT's(Trichy, Warangal, Suratkal): AIR< 1000, GATE Score: 680+, Marks: 50+
IIIT Banglore: GATE Score: 650+
OBC Category:
Top 7 IIT's: AIR<700, GATE Score: 680+, Marks: 52+
Top NIT's(Trichy, Warangal, Suratkal): AIR< 1200, GATE Score: 600+, Marks: 50+
IIIT Banglore: GATE Score: 600+
For SC Category: 50+ marks is a very safe score.
